UpGrid funds itself through one simple, transparent billing fee: 2 Rappen per kWh on the electricity sold within the energy community. The fee is deducted directly from the producer's credit note.
There is no surcharge on electricity sold to or bought from the grid operator. Consumers pay no participation fees, and producers pay no fixed fees for taking part in a LEG. Separate fees may apply to the billing service in a ZEV or vZEV.
If the billing fee would leave a producer earning less than they would under their grid operator's feed-in tariff, UpGrid will normally waive the additional fees. And if the local tariff situation means an energy community would bring no real benefit to producers and consumers overall – for example where the feed-in tariff is high and energy costs are low at the same time – UpGrid may decide against setting one up in the first place. There are no hidden costs.
